MxMo LXXXV (“Aw Nuts”) — My typical state of mind …

mxmologoYou have got to be kidding me?  I know we’ve been on a hiatus and doing our best with a renewed push at re-launching our efforts but has it really been a nine month absence from MxMo?  Really?!??!!!!???

As we typically consider our state of mind and efforts in this herein our little adventure, to be sorta nuts, it seems appropriate that the current MxMo theme offered up this time by Elana at the Stir and Strain blog, is “Nuts.”  We are feeling quite at home.  As our mind is turning to new projects, new endeavors, a re-launch and general all-around good vibes at this our friendly effort we are pleased to be back in the MxMo state of mind.  Thank you Elana for hosting and let’s go dear readers into the world of nuts …

Truth be told we had forgotten as of late about MxMo … yes, I’m due for a firing squad moment soon enough but what better way to get re-engaged than to post, in a MxMo event?

Nuts?  Nuts?  What the heck can we do with nuts? Crap? Help, please, nuts in a drink? Nuts in a new creation? … no, we can’t, go on … with, this …

Why yes we can … a little thought, a little un-creative imagination at two of our favorite drinks and we set out to try something different.  As P1000415you will re-call from our prior MxMo efforts we try to do “new” creations in MxMo events and this one is no different.  And once again we are providing our dear readers with a two-fer opportunity.

Nothing original in this one, but as our favorite drink is a Manhattan we must be able to riff this drink to make it a bit nuts?  Trying multiple “nutsy” subs, we settled on our singular bottle of nocino (which has been a true &%tch of a bottle to hold in our cabinet of goodies) as our “nuts” ingredient.  Once our target was identified we tried a few ins and outs of friendly Manhattan components and settled on a variation of a Perfect Manhattan.

The Upper East Sider
Recipe created (he thinks) by theSpeakista

•    2 oz Rittenhouse bonded rye
•    1/2 oz Dolin Blanc vermouth
•    1/2 oz Nux Alpina Nocino
•    1 barspoon Smith & Cross rum (optional …)
Garnish: none
Glass: chilled cocktail or coupe glass
Tools: mixing glass, bar-spoon and julep strainer

Assembly: Add all of the ingredients to the mixing glass with cracked and non-cracked ice and stir for several rotations.  Add additional ice and continue stirring until well blended, well chilled.  Strain the mixture into the serving glass.

Tasting Notes:  Pleasant enough.  Nice character and interaction between the darker, heat intensive rye flavors and the more subtle nut and floral/herbal ingredients.  When included, the rum gives a touch of funky undertone and interestingly sweet counterpoint that actually brings forth the nut-like flavors in a kinda of unique way.

P1000416In seeking to give bang for the buck our second offering comes hugely out of the blue … I’m not sure if this works?  I like it … I dig it … you may think “what the hey” but it is a kinda oddly interesting drink with a strong, and not-so strong nut forward profile — you get the toasted notes that fade a bit and come out as an almost semi-candy-like sweetness on the back end.  How then did it come about? Simple, we love Manhattan’s and would kill for a well-made Brooklyn and a few odd iterations later, out popped theSpeakista’s newest odd creation … the Hopelessly Devoted to You!.

•    1 1/2 oz Pistachio-Infused Aquavit (recipe below)
•    2/3 oz Dolin Rouge vermouth
•    1/3 oz Nux Alpina Nocino
•    1/3 oz Amaro CiaCiaro
Garnish: none
Glass: rocks glass or old fashion glass
Tools: mixing glass, bar-spoon, tea strainer and julep strainer

Assembly: Add all of the ingredients to the mixing glass with plenty of cracked and non-cracked ice stirring for about a minute or so until well chilled.  Strain the mixture into the serving glass containing a large cubed ice cube … sip, enjoy!

Pistachio-Infused Aquavit: take 1/4 cup of roasted, unsalted pistachios and cook them in a pre-heated 450 degree oven for 10 minutes.  Turn the broiler on high and cook the nuts until dark brown, maybe even slightly darkened.  Add the nuts to ~1/2 bottle of aquavit, and let steep for a day or two shaking once or twice.  Strain out the nuts, re-bottle and prepare for nut goodness.

Ah ha!  Nuts, we are absolutely nuts about … well, being nuts.  Thank you Elana for hosting this event and please dear readers, make sure you make it over to the entries in this MxMo event.

    Pistachio infused aquavit sound interesting. I shall have to try that. I shall also try the Upper East Sider although without the rum since I don’t have that particular bottle. Maybe something else might work?
