We start this, our first post of the New Year with high expectations for a very happy New Year! 2011 was in many ways a mixed bag for theSpeakista. On things that matter most, the home and family fronts, with one semi-tragic exception, life could not have been more blissful. However, on the work front, the ending of 2010 saw a job promotion bring plenty of stress and not much to show for it (typical, I know!) last year. Demands on our time resulted in far less meaningful attention being paid to this blog, save our four big projects that wrapped up the later half of the year.
Thus, we set out in 2012 with three new, fun filled projects on tap. Thanks to a note from a reader we have decided to extend our profile of drinks/drink styles to another venerable classic; Negroni Nirvana will be our attempt to do this bitter beauty justice. As of now we have about three weeks and over 20 different riffs of said classic lined up (let us know your favorite riff and see if it makes the line up). We’ll follow up this project with Punch Party in a Glass — simple idea actually, take those flavorful concoctions mixed up in a bowl and bring them down to single serving size. We’ll see what interesting flavors can be had in the land of punch.
Today kick-starts the first of the three new projects and we have decided to profile a spirit that over recent time I have learned to embrace. Tequila in 10 will be our go at giving this spirit the center stage attention it is due by trying out several known (and maybe a few lesser known) tequila-based drinks in hopes as always, of learning more about our fun medium. Tequila often gets a bum wrap in much the same way that my beloved scotch does – both posses a flavor that is viewed to be difficult to work with in drinks. I disagree! We will see if we can’t dispel you of this view. A good majority of tequila-based drinks are “sours” (containing citrus) likely the result of trying to tame or otherwise coax the tequila flavor into something more “user friendly.” As is our want, we’ll offer up but one citrus-based drink with the remaining nine being of the boozy stirred variety.
* Cautionary note: we admit that we are cheating a bit. While the name of this project is Tequila in 10, truth is that we will also highlight a drink or two that employ tequila’s kissing cousin from Oaxaca. I know, I know … sue us!
Okay, so while we won’t be breaking new ground in this project, we do hope that you play along and enjoy the next ten days of fun. Stop back tomorrow when we get things going with a great Brian Miller offering.

Negroni Nirvana just as I’ve fallen in love with Campari. Excellent timing! Looking forward to it.
